The dictionary defines SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT as, economic development that, by meeting the needs of the present, preserves the possibility of future generations satisfying theirs.
In 1987, the UN World Commission on Environment and Development presented the book “Our Common Future”, a work that analyzes the world situation at that time when global society was destroying the environment, at the same time it left more people in poverty or in a state of vulnerability. It can be said that it was the first attempt to eliminate the development/sustainability confrontation. Its purpose was to find means practical to reverse the environmental and development problems that were occurring at that time worldwide.
Its main promoter was the Norwegian doctor Gro Harlem Brundtland. Brundtland highlighted the lack of sustainability in the satisfaction of needs and ambitions in human progress. It evidenced the depletion of current environmental resources, depriving future generations of many of them.
“Architecture is an act of love and not a staging” Le Corbusier.
TOCurrently, the concept of sustainable (sustained) construction is identified with the use of different strategies aimed at minimizing the environmental impact of construction works throughout their different times.
It is not a fashion, nor a new architectural style, it is the result of taking into account new criteria related to the use of renewable energy and the use of construction materials and products that respect the environment. These criteria, by extension, are also applied in waste management and water treatment; as well as all the factors that may produce environmental impact.
Build green
There is still the belief that building green makes the project more expensive due to the technologies, systems or materials to be used.. However, a project with a LEED green seal (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) It varies between the same cost as a non-green one up to a maximum of 12% more, depending on the project.
Some of the innovations presented by the buildings awarded with the best LEED ratings:
-Radiant heating systems (more efficient and less polluting)
-Reduction of carbon dioxide emissions
-Vertical gardens or incorporation of large natural spaces in its facades, balconies...
-Rainwater recovery systems
All of them try to integrate architecture and landscape, (nature and construction)
